Gammon Theological Seminary Achieves SACSCOC Accreditation, Marking Historic Milestone in Its 143-Year History

Gammon Theological Seminary proudly announces that it has been approved for membership by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), achieving regional accreditation and reaching a historic milestone in the Seminary’s 143-year history.
The approval was granted during the June meeting of the SACSCOC Board of Trustees, which welcomed Gammon Theological Seminary as one of three new member institutions approved this year.
In announcing the decision, Dr. Stephen L. Pruitt, President of SACSCOC, highlighted the impact of the newly approved institutions. “These institutions reflect the diversity of missions represented throughout our membership and the many ways higher education transforms lives. From advancing life-saving biomedical research to preparing skilled members of the workforce and educating faith-based leaders, each institution contributes in meaningful ways to students, communities, and society.”

Founded in 1883, Gammon Theological Seminary is the only Historically Black Theological Institution of The United Methodist Church. Through its academic and degree-granting programs, Gammon prepares individuals who understand their vocation as working in partnership with God in forming a just and generative world for all through Christian ministry and public leadership.
“This moment represents the fulfillment of years of faithful work and commitment to academic excellence,” said Rev. Dr. Candace M. Lewis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gammon Theological Seminary. “Regional accreditation affirms the quality of our academic programs and the transformative impact of our mission. We celebrate this milestone with gratitude and excitement for the future.”
The achievement follows years of strategic planning, rigorous assessment, and continuous improvement as Gammon strengthened its academic programs and institutional capacity in pursuit of accreditation.

Bishop Sharma D. Lewis Logan, Chair of the Gammon Board of Trustees, reflected on the broader significance of the milestone. “As the only Historically Black Theological Institution of The United Methodist Church, Gammon holds a unique place in theological education and leadership development. Accreditation is both a recognition and a responsibility. It honors the generations who built and sustained this institution while positioning Gammon to prepare future leaders for the Church and the world. We are grateful to everyone whose dedication and faith made this achievement possible.”
Rev. Dr. Renita J. Weems, Chief Academic Officer, emphasized the academic significance of the decision. “Regional accreditation validates the excellence, integrity, and relevance of the educational experience offered at Gammon. Our faculty have built programs that are academically rigorous, theologically grounded, and responsive to the needs of today’s Church and society. This achievement strengthens our ability to educate leaders who are prepared to serve faithfully and lead effectively.”
SACSCOC membership signifies that an institution has demonstrated compliance with the Principles of Accreditation and a commitment to continuous improvement, educational quality, institutional effectiveness, and student success through a process grounded in peer review and accountability.
The accreditation milestone comes during a period of significant growth and innovation for Gammon as the Seminary advances its vision of educating and equipping persons called by God to be prophetic leaders for the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ and transforming the world. “This achievement strengthens our ability to serve students, churches, communities, and future generations of leaders,” Lewis added. “As we look toward the future, we remain committed to preparing leaders who will serve the Church, strengthen communities, and help build a more just and generative world.”
