
OUR BEGINNING
Gammon Theological Seminary had its beginning as Gammon School of Theology, first as a department of religion and philosophy at Clark University for the 1869-1870 academic year
In February 1872, Clark Theological Seminary was opened with 26 students. Gammon Theological Seminary was founded in 1883 by the Methodist Episcopal Church. Gammon is The United Methodist component of a consortium of six historically African American theological schools, The Interdenominational Theological Center.
Gammon at ITC is a co-educational, professional graduate school of theology. Its faculty personifies vigorous scholarship, rigorous academic discipline, and significant research in the service of the church and other communities in the world. It is the world’s premier resource for black church scholarship and faith-based solutions to the spiritual and socio-economic challenges confronting the African-American community.



OUR OFFERINGS
The Masters of Divinity Degree offering offers a holistic educational experience, integrating theological studies with preparation for the ministry.
The institution’s long-standing scholar/minister public theologian tradition prepares students for preaching, teaching, and a range of other roles in church and society. The institution’s courses fall into major areas of study: leadership, social justice, and Womanist Theology.
Gammon offers a Master of Divinity program and various lifelong learning opportunities making theological education accessible to all.

OUR ACCREDITATION
Gammon Theological Seminary is licensed by the Georgia Nonpublic Education Commission to operate as a graduate degree granting institution and is currently seeking accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS).
GTS is currently an “extended unit” of the Interdenominational Theological Center, and as a constituent member of the ITC who is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has conferred degrees in partnership with the ITC for Gammon Theological Seminary graduates since 1959. Gammon Theological Seminary is currently seeking separate accreditation through SACSCOC and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS).


FOUNDER OF GAMMON ELIJAH GAMMON
Elijah H. Gammon (1891 – 1891) became a wealthy man after the Civil War by manufacturing and selling farm harvesting equipment. With his generous financial gifts, he became a major benefactor and contributed greatly to the founding and development of Gammon Theological Seminary.
