September 16, 2025
President Dr. Candace M. Lewis has announced that Dr. C. Anthony Hunt has joined the Gammon faculty as Professor of Practice, Black Church & Wesleyan Studies. He began teaching in Fall 2024.
Dr. Hunt is a distinguished pastor-theologian, author, and civil rights educator. A fifth-generation United Methodist and Ordained Elder in Full Connection in the Baltimore-Washington Conference, he brings decades of experience at the intersection of church, academy, and justice work.
His current research explores the theological contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. and Howard Thurman, with recent publications including Out of Mountains of Despair: A Black Theology of Hope, Hope for the City, and The Catalyst. These works focus on the Beloved Community, Radically Inclusive Community, and Catalytic Leadership, particularly within urban and marginalized settings.
At Gammon, Dr. Hunt teaches courses on Black Church history, liberation theology, and transformational leadership and leads Civil Rights Immersion experiences in cities central to the struggle for justice and faith-based social change.
In his own words:
"I continue to find resonance, relevance, and hope in John Wesley's teachings on Social Holiness and our calling to reform the nation and serve the disinherited, poor, and oppressed among us."
